Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a medical condition characterized by involuntary muscle spasms in the pelvic floor muscles. These spasms can make it painful, difficult, or even impossible for a person to engage in vaginal penetration, such as during sexual intercourse or when using tampons and do medical exams.

Vaginismus can have various causes, including psychological, emotional, or physical factors. Some common causes and contributing factors may include:

Psychological factors: Past traumatic experiences, anxiety, fear of pain, guilt, or negative attitudes toward sex can contribute to vaginismus.

Physical factors: Infections, certain medical conditions, surgical procedures, or hormonal imbalances can lead to muscle tension and spasms.

Relationship issues: Poor communication, lack of emotional intimacy, or relationship conflicts can lead to anxiety and contribute to vaginismus.

Vaginismus is typically diagnosed through a physical examination and women’s health physiotherapist can help you.
