Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) is a specialized rehabilitation approach designed to improve the functional use of an affected limb by encouraging its active use while constraining the unaffected limb. This technique is primarily used for individuals with neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, or brain injury.

How CIMT Works

CIMT involves restricting the movement of the stronger, unaffected limb, which forces the use of the weaker, affected limb during daily activities. This encourages motor recovery through intensive, task-oriented practice and helps to retrain the brain’s ability to control movements in the affected limb.

Key Principles of CIMT:

  1. Repetition: Involves task-oriented, repetitive practice to improve motor function in the affected limb.
  2. Constraint: The unaffected limb is restrained to promote the use of the impaired limb.
  3. Behavioral Techniques: Incorporates a package of behavioral strategies, such as “shaping,” to encourage skill transfer from therapy to real-world settings.

Conditions Treated with CIMT:

Initially developed for stroke recovery, CIMT is now widely used for various neurological conditions, including:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Focal Hand Dystonia
  • Phantom Limb Pain

By integrating these techniques, CIMT enhances motor recovery, improves functional independence, and helps children and individuals overcome learned non-use of the affected limb.
