Constipation During and After Pregnancy

Constipation During and After Pregnancy

It is well known that pregnant women and new mothers often experience constipation. Several factors contribute to this condition:

  • Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy hormones slow down bowel activity, leading to constipation.
  • Postpartum Pain: After giving birth, pain from a C-section scar, tear, or episiotomy can make bowel movements extremely painful, causing what is known as terminal constipation.
  • Labour-induced Pressure: The pressure exerted during labor can lead to hemorrhoids, further causing painful bowel movements and terminal constipation.
  • Physical Changes: The growing uterus can push the rectum backward, creating an angle with the anus that compromises stool expulsion.
