Social Communication Disorder (SCD)

Social Communication Disorder (SCD)

Social Communication Disorder (SCD) is marked by ongoing challenges with the use of both verbal and nonverbal language for social purposes. Key difficulties include social interaction, pragmatic communication (the social rules of language), and language processing.

These issues can result in a range of challenges such as understanding context-specific communication, changing language style based on social cues, and interpreting nonliteral language. Misunderstanding or misinterpreting verbal and nonverbal communication in social contexts often leads to communication breakdowns.

Core Components of SCD:

Pragmatics

This refers to the socially appropriate use of language.

Social cognition

Understanding others’ emotions, mental states, and intentions.

Social interaction

Difficulties occur during communication between two or more individuals.

Language processing

Issues with both expressing and understanding language, especially in complex or ambiguous situations.

If your child is suffering from any of these conditions, do not hesitate to

Signs and Symptoms

  • Difficulty with appropriate greetings.
  • Inability to change language style based on context or listener.
  • Challenges in maintaining conversations, such as trouble with topic initiation, turn-taking, or providing relevant information.
  • Problems with understanding nonliteral language, making inferences, or understanding unspoken social cues.
  • Difficulty forming close relationships due to breakdowns in communication.

SCD can severely impact an individual’s ability to build relationships, participate in social settings, and perform academically or in a work environment. While the root causes of SCD remain largely unclear, it may co-occur with other conditions such as intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, or language disorders. SCD cannot be diagnosed in conjunction with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) due to the overlapping nature of social communication challenges in ASD.

Treatment and Intervention

SCD treatment focuses on helping individuals improve social communication skills in natural environments. Goals may include improving the individual’s ability to adjust speech, understand others’ perspectives, and use nonverbal communication cues. Collaboration between professionals such as teachers, psychologists, and speech-language Therapists is often essential for holistic treatment.

Key Treatment Strategies

  • Behavioral Interventions: Focus on teaching or modifying social communication behaviors through learning principles, like reinforcement.
  • Peer-Mediated Interventions: Involve teaching typically developing peers strategies to encourage positive social interactions with children who have SCD.
  • Social Communication Treatments: Target improving specific social communication skills using approaches like comic strip conversations, social skills groups, and video-based instruction.

Examples of specific interventions include:

  • Social Stories™: Helps children understand social situations and learn appropriate responses through structured narratives.
  • SCORE Skills Strategy: Focuses on teaching cooperative social skills, such as offering encouragement and self-control.
  • Social Scripts: Provide prompts to help children engage in more varied and spontaneous social interactions.

By focusing on strengths and addressing communication barriers, individuals with SCD can improve their ability to function effectively in social settings, thereby enhancing their overall quality of life.
