SLT – ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD affects a person's ability to focus and manage their behavior. Individuals with ADHD may face challenges in school and forming friendships. A speech-language Therapist (SLT) can offer support.

ADHD is a lifelong neurological condition that affects a person's attention span. Some individuals with ADHD also struggle with sitting still or controlling their impulses.

Causes of ADHD

The exact cause of ADHD remains unknown, but genetics is thought to play a major role. Many children diagnosed with ADHD have a family history of the disorder.

Evaluating ADHD

Your child’s doctor will assess them for ADHD and may gather insights from others, like parents and teachers. The school may also conduct evaluations to identify the support your child needs in class. An SLT can assess for any speech, language, or social difficulties.

The SLP may:

  • Observe how your child interacts with peers and teachers
  • Listen to how your child communicates with family members
  • Discuss your child’s speech and language development
  • Talk with your child to understand their awareness of the challenges they face
  • Assess their speech and language abilities
  • Evaluate how well your child retells stories or describes events
  • Assess social skills, including turn-taking and attention during conversations
  • Evaluate how well your child can plan, organize, and manage details

Treatment for ADHD

Every child with ADHD has unique needs. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help improve focus, along with information on potential side effects.

Some children with ADHD may also have learning disabilities or need assistance with social skills. An SLT can help address speech, language, and social challenges. They can teach your child strategies for planning and organizing tasks and improve their conversational skills, such as turn-taking and listening.

In the classroom, the SLT may collaborate with teachers to implement helpful strategies. This might include seating your child near the front of the class or using checklists and planners for organization. The SLT may also work directly in the classroom to provide support.
