Diastasis recti abdominus is an abnormal widening of the gap between the rectus abdominus muscles. While it most commonly occurs in postpartum women, it can affect anyone. The abdominal muscles are crucial for postural control, trunk and pelvic stability, movement, and respiration. Diastasis recti can increase the risk of developing back and pelvic pain, as the supporting muscles have been compromised. Weak abdominal muscles can also result in weak pelvic floor muscles, potentially leading to incontinence or prolapse in the future.
During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles and connective tissues stretch to accommodate the growing baby. Pregnancy hormones help by relaxing the muscles and ligaments. Factors such as pushing during delivery or undergoing a caesarean section can increase the likelihood of developing diastasis recti.
Diagnosis can be confirmed via ultrasound or through a physical examination conducted by a physiotherapist.
