Neuromuscular Re-education

Neuromuscular Re-education

Neuromuscular re-education is a therapeutic approach designed to retrain the brain and spinal cord to control voluntary and reflex motor activities. It uses a variety of manual techniques, exercises, and activities aimed at re-developing normal, controlled movement patterns in children with neuromuscular challenges.

Schedule an appointment with one of our Pediatric Physiotherapists today to learn how we can help you.

Key elements of neuromuscular re-education include:

  • Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF):
PNF is a technique used to stimulate muscle activation through the body’s proprioceptors (muscle spindles and Golgi Tendon Organs). By applying resistance, traction, stretching, and verbal or tactile cues, PNF promotes the recruitment of muscle motor units, helping to restore normal movement patterns.
  • Balance and Core Control Activities:
Exercises that improve balance and strengthen core muscles, such as Bosu exercises or activities using a therapeutic ball, are essential in helping children develop proper postural control and body mechanics.
  • Motor Learning and Timing:
The treatment aims to ensure that muscles are activated at the right time during movement. By repeatedly practicing these motor activities, the brain and spinal cord learn to coordinate muscles more effectively.

Neuromuscular re-education is particularly beneficial for children with muscle paresis, paralysis, or other neuromuscular conditions, as it helps restore optimal function and improve movement capabilities..
